Kitchen Remedies – using everyday foods in place of medicine

Honey

Internal Use:
Honey has a long history of use as a remedy for coughs, colds and sore throats. Honey and lemon juice in warm water can be useful for soothing a cold. Honey mixed with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar can be used in place of cough mixture.
Honey can just be taken neat off the spoon, mixed into yoghurt or spread on bread.
Taken regularly it can be useful for hayfever (especially if you take locally produced honey) and also sinusitis and catarrh.
External Use:
Honey is well known for its benefits in healing wounds, burns and skin conditions. It can be applied directly to infected spots, wounds or ulcers to help draw out any toxic matter. It can be soothed onto burns to facilitate healing.

Mustard

mustardMustard is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, a stimulant and an emetic (causes vomiting).
Internal Use:
Mustard stimulates the circulation and fights cold and flu. It is good for lethargy and depression. For poisoning a teaspoon of mustard on hot water will induce vomiting. A mustard seed infusion can help chest infections, rheumatism and arthritis. To make an infusion put a teaspoon of ground seeds into a cup of boiling water, leave to brew , then strain and drink.
External Use;
Hot mustard plasters applied as a compress have been used traditionally to relieve congestion and reduce inflammation by drawing blood to the surface of the skin. To make a plaster, crush a handful of seeds, mix with a little flour and some warm water to make a paste. Fold the mixture into a cotton cloth and place over the affected area.  A hot mustard foot bath is said to relieve congestion in the head and lungs by drawing the blood downwards.

Onion

Onions are antiseptic, detoxifying, diuretic, a stimulant for the circulatory system and have been used to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
Internal Use:
Onions help to cleanse the blood and urinary systems, so can help with water retention, arthritis and gout. They can help relieve flatulence and constipation. Onions are good to eat when you have a cold, sore throat or flu. They help  to clear catarrh caused by sinus infections, allergies or chesty colds. Eaten raw is most effective.
External Use:
A slice of raw onion can help to take away the pain of insect stings. Onion juice also promotes healing of burns, cuts or abscesses.

Lemon

Lemons are astringent, an anti-oxidant, anti-septic and detoxifying.
Internal Use:
A slice of lemon in hot water on waking helps to clear the digestive system and stimulate the liver. Lemon juice is good for digestive conditions such as nausea, heartburn and constipation. Lemon juice’s cleansing and detoxifying properties make it a useful general tonic and cleanser for the whole body. A tablespoon of juice in water before a meal has been known to assist with asthma.  For sore throats, two teaspoons of lemon juice in hot water (allowed to cool) makes a useful gargle
External Use:
Used externally lemon juice can help to stop bleeding and refresh and tone greasy skin. Rub juice into wounds to stop bleeding. Add to cotton wool for nosebleeds.

Cabbage

Cabbage acts as a diuretic, is anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and antiseptic.
Internal Use:
Cabbage stimulates the immune system and fights infection. It is used to heal stomach ulcers, relieve heartburn and digestive disorders such as colitis. Eaten raw or as a juice is the most effective.
External Use:
Applied externally it heals ulcers. A cabbage poultice can be used on burns, shingles, cold sores, bruises and stings. For nursing mothers it can be useful to ease sore breasts or mastitis. To make a poultice use the greenest leaves, discarding the stalks. Soften the leaves in warm water and then crush with a rolling pin or similar. Apply several layers to the affected area and hold in place with a bandage. Apply fresh leaves every few hours.

  2. This is great information. Thank you for sharing. I always try to use natural remedies before medication. I’m adding raw onions to my dinner salad tonight to lower blood pressure – I’m trying to get off those darn pills.

    • You could try beetroot juice as well, that is excellent for lowering blood pressure. It has quite a strong taste, but if you juice it in with other fruits or vegetables such as apples, carrots or greens it is more palatable. Alternatively try grating raw beetroot onto your salad too.

  3. I’ve tried honey and lemons before and it is really effective.

  4. I actually prefer natural remedies than medication. The safer and the more natural, the better.
