Feeling down from time to time is entirely normal, and most people will not feel deliriously happy with life all the time. However, when you have the blues, it can be difficult to shake it off, but never fear there are several ways that you can turn that mood around.
Hopefully this list will give you some inspiration to discover your own mood-enhancing strategies
Call a friend. Although you might not be in a frame of mind to speak to someone, the fact is that a melancholic mindset offers perfect time to reach out to another person. Get hold of your sister, your best friend, or even your mum to hear about how they’re doing. A simple chat will revive you emotionally. Go ahead and pick up the phone.
Let it out. Don’t be afraid to talk about your own feelings. It’s okay to tell someone you’re feeling down, and talking about things might just help you work out why you might be feeling the way you do. Getting it off your chest will help your spirits rise.
Question your feelings. Muse on why you feel like you do. If you can determine the reason for your low mood, you might be able to do something about it. Be open to all possible solutions. But if you can’t figure out the source of your blues, that’s okay, too. Don’t get too hung up on something you’re unable to come to a conclusion about, and make yourself more miserable in the process.
Write it down. What are you really feeling? Label it. Why are you feeling this way? Describe it. How long have you felt these funky feelings? Jot it down. Journal about how you are feeling. Just let whatever comes to mind come out onto the page.
Notice what makes you feel better. Maybe getting lost in a book written by your favourite author, helps to take your mind off things and as a result your mood improves. Perhaps if you meditate for 10 – 20 minutes you feel more satisfied and calm. Maybe cuddling your children or your pet helps. Take note for future reference.
Take some exercise or just go for a walk. If you can just get yourself moving (even if you don’t really feel like it), your body can release endorphins, (the “feel good” hormones), thus, lifting your mood. A change of scene or some fresh air can help enormously.
Eat a good balanced diet. Make sure you have plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole-grains, some protein, nuts, seeds and cold-pressed vegetable oils each day. Having proper intake of fats, vitamins and minerals can make the difference between a satisfied mood and a ho-hum one.
Give yourself a time limit. With a time limit on how long you’re allowing yourself to be in this mood, you might work harder to figure out the nagging issue and tap into your personal power to feel better.
Call a professional. If you reach your time limit and still find yourself feeling down, consider calling a counsellor, therapist or life coach to help you get unstuck. Just making the decision to get help will take some emotional pressure off right away.
