In the olden days they used canaries to test for dangerous gases in mines, because they are highly sensitive to their environment. Women can be thought of as having similar characteristics. A woman’s hormonal system is highly sensitive to her physical, emotional and spiritual environment. Factors such as stress, environmental pollutants, alcohol and poor quality diets can have a potent effect on the balance of a woman’s hormones.

Do you suffer with Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, Menstrual problems, Menopausal symptoms, Polycystic ovaries, Thyroid imbalance, fat around the middle, inability to lose weight, or fertility issues. These can all be the result of disrupted hormones.

The body’s hormones are complexly related, each individual performing a unique biological function controlling  functions such as bone density, weight, mood, metabolism, reproduction and cognitive function. When hormones are disrupted and deviate from their natural rhythms and cycles they may cause ill health and disease in one or all of those areas. Disturbed hormone metabolism has been associated with a wide range of complaints including:

  • Weight gain
  • Insulin resistance
  • Blood sugar problems
  • Chronic fatigue
  • PMS
  • Menopausal problems
  • Polycystic ovaries
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Infertility
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Thyroid problems
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Premature aging

Throughout a woman’s life, the flow of hormonal changes from day to day and year to year will dictate her quality of life. The proper levels and amounts of various hormones are the foundation of optimal female health.

Female hormone imbalance is a direct result of poor nutrient food intake, poor diet choices, chronic stress, a lack of physical activity and an accumulation of toxic substances that enter our body everyday.

A dietary and Lifestyle approach has its basis in understanding that a woman’s health is a reflection of her environment. By looking at the whole person and her unique story, hormonal issues can be treated effectively.

Judicious use of Nutritional therapy and other Natural Therapies such as Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Exercise can restore the hormonal balance, and hence restore health and well-being.

  1. I appreciate those that look at the whole picture of the woman – lifestyle, eating, exercise, climate – all of it. That’s awesome.

  2. i’m ignorant in this. How do you go about knowing what needs balancing? Or what to do to balance the hormones?

    • You need to work with someone who knows how to assess and spot the signs and symptoms. Blood tests can go some way to giving a broad indication of hormone levels. You can also get various other functional test such as adrenal stress profile. But generally your history and current symptoms will give the biggest clues. Then you can follow hormone balancing diet (see elswhere in this blog) and any other lifestyle measures needed.

  3. Knowing what canaries were used for, your title caught my attention! I can tell when I’ve been eating too much junk food or unhealthy stuff. I’m more sluggish and fatigued. Like Sue said, it’s good to look at the whole picture and not just one element.
