Spiritual Awakening

developing your spirtual awarenessHave you felt the stirrings of a spiritual awakening? Have you felt drawn to such things as finding and living your higher purpose, learning how to channel, developing your psychic or clairvoyant abilities, meditating, healing or other practices that expand your consciousness? Do you trust your inner guidance and seek to follow it with action? Are you ready to start developing your spiritual awareness but are not quite sure how to go about it? Well here are some simple ways in which you can start to develop your awareness

Read some good books

Some of the first books I ever read were those by Gill Edwards – ‘Living Magically’ and ‘Stepping Into the Magic’. These books are an easy read and introduce spiritual concepts in a simple way. Of course there is the classic, Louise Hay ‘Heal Your Life’ if you want a book in a similar vein but with a more American flavour.

If you would like more of a story based book which illustrates principles, then the James Redfield, ‘Celestine Prophecy’ series are more light hearted and entertaining. Or in a similar vein Diana Cooper’s ‘The Silent Stones’ and ‘Codes of Power’ are a good read.

Alternatively you can visit the book store (or online store these days) and for divine guidance in choosing an appropriate book.

Take time to be still and just be

Every day take a few moments to pause and just be. Turn your attention inwards and let go of the outside world. Sometimes it helps to focus on the breath. Just notice the sensations as you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Don’t try to change your breathing pattern, just observe it. Just sit for a few moments whilst you practice this. Each day try and extend the time you spend being still like this.

Every day write a gratitude list

Every day write down the things you are grateful for. This could be tangible items such as your house or car or more intangible benefits such as bright sunny weather, or feeling happy. Today I am grateful for ……………… and then list 10 items that come to mind.

Start a Meditation Practice

Many people associate meditation with Eastern religions or specialist Yoga techniques. However you do not need to have any special beliefs to practice meditation. Its benefits have nothing to do with religion.

Experiments have shown that meditation changes the activity of the brain, enhancing relaxation and producing a restful state of mind.

There are many benefits to be gained from regular meditation. It can calm the emotions and help in developing an inner peacefulness. It can allow you the space to take a more detached attitude to your life. It will help you to cope with stress and it can assist in helping you to see your problems more clearly. It will certainly help you to learn to relax. It is also said that meditation can help concentration and self discipline and that it can increase creativity.

Join a group or take a class

Developing a spiritual practice is just that – practice. You need to be shown or taught how to do it and then it is a matter of practice. So find like-minded people to learn from and practice with. You might like to join an established faith church, join a Buddhist group, join a meditation group and learn to meditate or take part in an Angel workshop. There are no right or wrong ways, you just need to find whatever is right for you.

Finally some thoughts to finish on:

I have a body but I am not my body
I have thoughts but I am not my thoughts
I have feelings but I am not my feelings
I have beliefs but I am not my beliefs
I play many roles but I am not my roles
I am the one who remains at the centre of all that comes into and passes through my life.
I am a soul, eternal and imperishable, and my original and true nature is one of peace.

  1. Delightful blog, you gave a lot of examples people could choose from on their spiritual journey and some good reads. Great thought at the end.

  2. I meditate occasionally and find time to be still almost every day. I also read Buddhist books for spiritual and life guidance.
