My Favourite Kitchen Gadgets Part 1 – (for the raw food kitchen but equally good for normal people)

Spiral slicer  or  ‘Spiraliser’

spiraliserThis tool allows you to create noodles, ribbons and decorative slices from vegetables such as sweet potatoes, courgettes, carrots, cucumber, apples. In fact it will work well with any fruit or vegetable which is reasonably firm. There are several different blades with different cutting styles, which will allow you to create different effects such as ‘spaghetti’ , ribbons or spiral strands. It’s very easy to use; just place your prepared fruit or vegetable on the spikes, wind the handle and hey presto, instant noodles!

Mini Spiral Slicer

This tool comes in handy if you are only processing small quantities and do not want to go to the bother of getting out the spiraliser.  It is a bit like a giant pencil sharpener and works in the same way. Just pop your carrot or other vegetable into the tool and turn and the spirals will appear.

A mandolin is a long, rectangular hand-operated slicer that allows the user to create various thicknesses of slices and cuts to various vegetables. Again the tool has several blades to produce different effects, such as thin strips, diagonal strips, and small chopped pieces. Make sure you get one with a safety handle because the blades are usually very sharp! The mandolin is a very useful tool for quick chopping and slicing with minimal clean up afterwards.

See here for video which shows these tools in use.

  1. I love my mandoline but I’ve never seen the spiraliser. It looks excellent; I may have to invest.

  2. We’re not on a raw diet, but I think these are great tools 🙂
