How to spot signs of adrenal stress

Are you an over-active person? Always on the go and rushing about busy, busy, busy…..

Maybe you are a workaholic with a hectic schedule, burning the candle at both ends and with precious little down time.

Are you addicted to exercise or to visiting the gym to keep you feeling good?

Do you need a regular stimulus to get you going, or to keep you going? Are you having frequent input of coffee / tea / sugary foods or cigarettes?

If so you are likely to be ‘living on your adrenals’. Or in other words you are pushing yourself through on the empty energy of stimulants rather than nourishing yourself with good nutrition and rest.

 

Factors which can deplete your Adrenals

Our modern lifestyle is such that there are many factors which can put a strain on your adrenals, and these include the following:

  • A busy lifestyle where you continually take on more tasks without stopping to relax and recharge.
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • A high stress load – we have continual demands at work, financial commitments, and family issues
  • Trauma to the body – either physical traumas such as accidents,  or emotional traumas and dramas
  • Pregnancy and childbirth – especially having children in relatively quick succession
  • Chemical toxins and heavy metal poisoning
  • Electro-magnetic pollution – long time exposure to electrical equipment, wireless technology, mobile phones etc.
  • Poor nutrition and subsequent lack of raw materials for hormone production
  • Overuse of stimulants (sugar, caffeine, nicotine etc.)

Here are some signs which can indicate over-stressed adrenals which are in need of care and attention. How many of these apply to you?

  •  Inability or reluctance to slow down or take a break.
  • Need for regular intake of sugary foods, coffee, energy drinks, cigarettes and the like to keep you going.
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Feeling hyper or unable to relax
  • Poor sleep or insomnia
  • Poor concentration
  • Anxiety or unspecific fears
  • Inconsistent memory
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Allergic conditions or symptoms
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Muscular aches and pains
  • Craving for salt or savoury foods

Do this ever happen to you?

You take a break or a holiday and immediately feel exhausted or even worse get sick. You reduce your level of stimulation by giving up coffee or cigarettes and feel really tired.

Obviously living on your adrenals is not a sustainable way of life. If you recognise yourself in any above scenarios it is time to take stock and do some work to take care of your adrenal glands.

Your adrenal glands are just one part on the complex jigsaw that is your hormonal system. If you have been diagnosed with a hormone-related medical condition such diabetes, hypo-thyroid, infertility, or poly-cystic ovaries then your adrenals will be involved and are likely to be operating below their best.
