The amount and quality of your sleep has an effect on your hormones. Poor sleep patterns can lead to weight gain, and obesity can cause sleep problems.

Leptin and ghrelin work together to control feelings of hunger, cravings and feeling full. Ghrelin stimulates your appetite and encourages you to eat. Leptin signals that you are feeling full and that metabolism needs to increase.

However lack of sleep or poor quality sleep reduces the levels of leptin and increases the levels of ghrelin.

The result of this is that you don’t feel satisfied after you eat and your appetite continues to be stimulated, especially for high carbohydrate foods, leading to weight gain over time.

ACTION: Make sure you are getting enough good quality sleep – especially if you have issues with your weight.
