No 9 – choose your cosmetics and toiletries carefully

Hormone balance can be adversely affected by various toxins present in our environment. Although any one substance might not cause a problem by itself, it is the accumulation of the various chemicals and pollutants which combine to produce a potentially toxic cocktail which can upset the delicate balance of hormones

Personal toiletries

Have you ever stopped to consider how many chemicals you are applying to your body each day in the form of shower gels, shampoos and body lotions? Each morning we wash, deodorise, perfume and moisturise ourselves with various different products which together may contain over 100 different chemicals, many of which are toxic.

Avoid personal care products containing any of the following:

  • Sodium Lauryl (or Laureth) Sulfate
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Fragrance
  • Nonylphenols
  • Isobutane
  • Petrolatum
  • Toluene
  • Triclosan

To add to the confusion, products are commonly labelled ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ purely for marketing reasons – they often contain just as many toxins.

Cosmetics

Perfumes and cosmetics contain all sorts of nasties – carcinogens (cancer causing compounds), mutagens, preservatives and toxic heavy metals. Many products contain cadmium which has now been demonstrated to be a factor in cases of aggressive breast cancer. Expensive brands are not necessarily any better than cheap ones when it comes to dangerous chemicals. Try and seek out natural, organic and non-toxic makeup and nail varnish.

ACTION: Do an audit of your toiletries and cosmetics. What could you change?
